Grand Palace Bangkok

It’s hard to describe how great this place is

Residence of the kings from the eighteenth century to the mid twentieth century, the Royal Palace or Phra Borom Maha Ratcha Wang is a must visit in Bangkok.

It occupies an area of 218,400 sqm and is surrounded by a wall of 1,900 meters in length, behind it there is a channel created for defensive intentions that, along with the river, makes the area of the Grand Palace to look like an island called Rattana Kosin.
Construction began in 1792 when King Rama I decided to take the capital of Siam from Thonburi to Bangkok, east of the Chao Phraya River. The palace was his place of residence and the center of government.

To construct it the Chinese traders who occupied the area were expelled and asked to move to the Yaowarat site (where today we still find the Chinese community in Bangkok). They also copied the design of Ayuttaya, the former capital, that’s why the palace is rectangular, the river is west and the Grand Palace is east of the enclosure and buildings are oriented north. The material also came from Ayuttaya, although King banned dismantle temples they did bring bricks, stones and materials available at that time because the city was destroyed due to the wars between Siam and Burma.

The Grand Palace can be divided into three parts:

-The outer court:
This is the area we found just inside the front door, Visetchaisri Gate. Formerly there were several ministerial offices, stables for the elephants, the barracks of the royal guard, the mint and arsenal.

-The middle court:
It is the main part of the palace, where we find the most important buildings, both residential and government and great temples.

-The inner court:
It occupies the southernmost part of the enclosure and was inhabited only by the king, his harem, his children and servants. Currently this part is closed to the public and their buildings are not used.

It’s hard to describe how great this place is, its architecture, its colors, sculptures, details … everywhere you look there is something wonderful to put your eyes on… The Golden Dome, the Tower of Gold, the giant mock of the Angkhor Wat Temple in Cambodia, the Thotkhirithon…
